Armed Robbers Steal K181,000 from Mufulira Wanderers Secretariat
Mufulira Wanderers Football Club has confirmed that armed robbers stole K181,000 in gate takings following the club’s Week 20 fixture against Nchanga Rangers at Shinde Stadium on Sunday evening.
In a statement released by Club President George Katongo, the incident occurred around 18:00 hours at the club secretariat shortly after the match.
“Armed robbers held members of staff at gunpoint and made away with cash amounting to K181,000, which had been realised from gate takings,” Katongo said.
He further disclosed that the suspects hijacked a Toyota Harrier, registration number AIF 4314, belonging to Logistics Manager Patrick Mwanza. The vehicle was scheduled to transport the cash to Mopani Security for safekeeping.
“The assailants also hijacked a Toyota Harrier… which was to be used to transport the cash to Mopani Security for safe keeping. Gunshots were fired to scare away people in the vicinity before the suspects fled the scene,” he said.
Katongo explained that police were immediately alerted and launched a manhunt.
“Later in the evening, the motor vehicle was abandoned by the suspects and subsequently recovered by the police, while the robbers escaped with the stolen cash,” he added.
The Zambia Police Service has since intensified investigations to apprehend the culprits.
“Mufulira Wanderers Football Club deeply regrets this unfortunate incident and assures all stakeholders that we are cooperating fully with the police and taking measures to strengthen security going forward,” Katongo said.
No injuries were reported during the incident.
