Banda Calls for Strong Preparation as Copper Queens Face ‘Group of Death’ at WAFCON
Zambia Women’s National Team captain Barbra Banda has described Group C at the upcoming CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) as a “group of death” but believes the Copper Queens are ready to rise to the challenge with the right preparation.
Reacting to the official draw, Banda said facing Africa’s top teams is part of the journey for any side that wants to be the best on the continent.
“When you want to be the best, you have to beat the best,” Banda said. “It’s a tough group, especially playing against the champions Nigeria. We played them at the last cup, and this time around we believe we can do better when we meet again.”
Zambia will open their Group C campaign against Egypt on March 18 at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Morocco before taking on 10-time champions Nigeria on March 21 at the same venue. The Copper Queens will conclude their group matches against neighbours Malawi on March 24 at CS Fes.
Banda also warned against underestimating Malawi and Egypt, noting the quality across the group.
“Malawi is our neighbour and they are a very good team with quality players. Egypt too is a strong side. It’s really a tough group, but as the Copper Queens, we believe we can prepare well and go through to the next round,” she said.
The Orlando Pride forward stressed the importance of immediate and focused preparations, especially after the off-season and injury setbacks within the squad.
“Preparations have to start now because we don’t have much time. We’ve had injuries and an off-season, but everyone is getting back on their feet. What will help us is proper preparation and good friendly games so we can compete effectively,” Banda added.
Banda also highlighted the bigger picture, with the tournament serving as a qualifier for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
“It’s very important for Zambia to make it again to the World Cup. We qualified last time but didn’t do our best. These games are the ones that will help us qualify, so we definitely have to give everything,” she said.
Group C also sees Nigeria opening their campaign against Malawi, while Egypt and Malawi meet in the second round before Nigeria and Egypt clash in the final set of group matches.
The 2026 WAFCON will run from March 17 to April 3 in Morocco, with Africa’s best women’s national teams battling not only for continental glory but also for a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
