Copper Queens Goalkeeper Hazel Nali Ready for WAFCON “Group of Death” Challenge

Zambia’s star goalkeeper Hazel Nali has expressed excitement and determination as the Copper Queens resume preparations for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Copper Queens have been drawn in what is being called the “Group of Death” – Group C, which features 10-time and defending champions Nigeria, Egypt, Zambia, and Malawi.

Speaking during a training session, Nali said, “It feels good, and everyone is happy to be back and start the preparations for the WAFCON. What matters the most is the preparation.”

She emphasized the importance of both local and international training camps, noting that each player is committed to giving their best. “If we prepare adequately as a team, we are able to deliver the results that are required,” Nali said.

Acknowledging the tough competition, Nali added, “It’s a very tough group, and no group is easy at the WAFCON. Every team is looking forward to the tournament, and it’s very important not only to Zambia but to every participating team.”

For Nali, the focus is on teamwork rather than individual accolades. “For now, I’m just looking forward to helping the team and working together. Football is a team sport, so my individual goals will come later,” she explained.

Having returned from a long injury layoff, Nali expressed gratitude and motivation to be back on the field. “I feel honoured and grateful to be back in the team. I’m just looking forward to working hard because hard work is the most important thing right now,” she said.

Looking ahead to the tournament, the goalkeeper stressed the importance of taking each game seriously. “As a team, we need to take each game as it comes. The target is always winning because that’s how you advance to the next stage,” Nali concluded.

The Copper Queens, fueled by determination and teamwork, are now fully focused on overcoming a challenging Group C and aiming for a spot at the next World Cup.
