Daka’s Late Header Rescues Zambia in AFCON Group A Draw with Mali
Patson Daka struck deep into stoppage time to snatch a dramatic 1–1 draw for Zambia against Mali in a tense Group A clash at the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025. The encounter was played at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca and left Group A finely balanced behind leaders Morocco.
Mali looked set to claim all three points after dominating large spells of the contest, but a late moment of Zambian resolve ensured the spoils were shared.
The Eagles started the match on the front foot, controlling possession and pushing Zambia deep into their own half. Lassine Sinayoko, Mamadou Sangaré and El Bilal Touré were heavily involved in Mali’s attacking play, probing a disciplined Zambian defence. Despite Mali’s early pressure, clear-cut chances were limited, with Zambia goalkeeper Willard Mwanza producing several key saves.
The most decisive moment of the first half came in the 42nd minute when Mali were awarded a penalty following a VAR review. However, Mwanza rose to the occasion, saving Touré’s spot kick to keep the score level at the break.
Mali finally broke the deadlock just after the hour mark. Following a corner in the 61st minute, the ball fell kindly to Sinayoko inside the area, and he reacted quickest to fire a powerful close-range effort high into the net, giving Mali a deserved lead.
Zambia were forced to chase the game and gradually increased their attacking intent. Dominic Chanda, Patson Daka and Fashion Sakala all went close as the Chipolopolo pushed forward, while Mali remained dangerous on the counter, with Sinayoko and Dorgeles Nene threatening to extend the lead.
As the match entered stoppage time, Mali appeared to be managing the game comfortably. However, in the 90+2nd minute, Zambia found their breakthrough. Mathews Banda delivered a precise cross into the box, and Daka rose highest to power a header into the bottom corner, stunning Mali and sending the Zambian bench into celebration.
The final whistle confirmed a frustrating outcome for Mali, who had controlled much of the contest but failed to put the game to bed. Zambia, meanwhile, were rewarded for their persistence and resilience with a valuable point.
The draw leaves Group A wide open behind Morocco. Zambia will now turn their attention to their next fixture against Comoros on Friday, December 26, with kick-off set for 19:30hrs, as they look to build on this fighting performance.
