Häuptle Braces for “Very Tough” Group as Copper Queens Land Nigeria, Egypt and Malawi at WAFCON
Zambia Women’s National Team head coach Nora Häuptle has welcomed what she describes as a challenging but exciting group at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), following the Copper Queens’ placement in Group C alongside defending champions Nigeria, Egypt and Malawi.
Speaking after the draw, Häuptle made it clear there will be no room for easing into the tournament, warning that every match in the group will demand maximum focus from the first whistle.
“It’s no warm-up time,” Häuptle said. “It’s a good group, but also Malawi, never underestimate Malawi. They have top players in strong leagues, so I expect very tough and tight games. If you survive this group, you become very strong going into the knockout stage.”
Zambia will once again come up against Nigeria, the reigning champions and the most decorated side in WAFCON history. The Super Falcons were responsible for eliminating the Copper Queens in their last meeting, a result that still lingers in the memory of many Zambian fans.
Asked how she feels about facing Nigeria again with a squad stacked with some of Africa’s most valuable and high-profile players, Häuptle remained calm but confident.
“Nigeria are many-time champions of this tournament, so we see ourselves in the position of the hunters,” she said. “We will prepare well, put good friendly matches on the pitch, and work on the right strategy. Our top players are getting ready, and I’m sure we’ll find the right approach and the right daily level.”
The Swiss tactician also addressed concerns around squad readiness, particularly in goal, after Zambia previously competed without a first-choice goalkeeper in a major tournament.
“Hazen Nali is back,” Häuptle confirmed. “I’ve worked a lot in the last months to bring all those players back in. Some have come through injuries, but now we have the whole squad together. Raising the bar in the goalkeeper position is a key element for us.”
With a settled squad, renewed competition for places and a clear plan for preparation, the Copper Queens head into WAFCON knowing the task ahead is daunting, but not impossible.
Group C may be unforgiving, but if Häuptle’s side can navigate their way past Nigeria, Egypt and Malawi, Zambia could emerge battle-hardened and dangerous when the knockout rounds begin.
