Mumamba Remains Last Zambian Coach to Beat Morocco

Zambia’s 3–2 victory over Morocco in an international friendly in June 2019 remains a historic milestone, with Mumamba Numba still the last Zambian coach to defeat the North African giants in any competition.

The memorable encounter, played on 16 June 2019, saw the Chipolopolo defy the odds away from home, coming from behind to stun the Atlas Lions. Morocco, featuring several Europe-based stars, had twice taken the lead through Hakim Ziyech, who scored in the 24th minute and later converted a penalty in the 54th minute.

However, Zambia showed resilience and attacking intent. Mwape Musonda struck almost immediately after kick-off to give the visitors an early advantage, before Kings Kangwa restored parity in the 44th minute. Substitute Enock Mwepu then delivered the decisive blow in the 74th minute, sealing a famous win for Zambia.

Numba Mumamba’s tactical approach and bold substitutions proved decisive on the night, as Zambia absorbed pressure and punished Morocco on the counter-attack. The result was widely praised as one of Zambia’s most impressive performances against a top-ranked African side in recent history.

Since that 2019 friendly, Zambia has struggled to replicate such success against Morocco, underlining the significance of Mumamba’s achievement. As the Chipolopolo continue to rebuild and seek consistency on the continental stage, the 3–2 win remains a benchmark and a reminder that Zambia can compete with Africa’s elite on their day.
