POWER DYNAMOS CAN GET ONLY US$100,000 IF ELIMINATED NOW
Power Dynamos can get only US$100,000 if they are eliminated from the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League at the First Preliminary Round stage, as the return legs of the 2026/27 campaign get underway this week.
The US$100,000 subvention is provided by CAF to clubs eliminated in the Preliminary Rounds to assist with travel and other logistical costs.
Power Dynamos face a difficult task when they host Sudanese side Al Merreikh SC on Saturday, trailing 1-0 on aggregate after the first leg in Kigali, Rwanda.
The Zambian champions must overturn the deficit at home to progress to the Second Preliminary Round, where some of Africa’s highest-ranked clubs await.
Across the continent, several established sides enter the decisive second legs with valuable advantages.
Egyptian side Pyramids FC hold a 2-0 advantage over Kenyan champions Gor Mahia, while five-time African champions TP Mazembe take a 1-0 lead into their home match against Ghana’s Medeama SC.
Tanzanian giants Simba SC also have a 1-0 advantage over Malawi’s Mighty Wanderers, while Atlético Petróleos lead UD do Songo by the same scoreline.
Al Hilal Omdurman are in a strong position after defeating Burundi’s Aigle Noir 2-0 away, with Zamalek holding a 2-1 advantage over AS Port of Djibouti.
Wiliete de Benguela recorded one of the biggest wins of the opening round, beating Seychelles representatives Foresters FC 4-0, while Morocco’s Maghreb de Fès defeated Rahimo FC 4-1.
Other sides carrying first-leg advantages include AS Mangasport, CFFA, El Merriekh Bentiu, JS Saoura, Swehly SC and Teungueth FC.
Meanwhile, Mauritian debutants La Cure Waves remain in contention after holding South African giants Orlando Pirates to a goalless draw.
The winners of the two-legged ties will advance to the Second Preliminary Round.
The financial stakes increase significantly as the competition progresses, with the eventual TotalEnergies CAF Champions League winners set to receive a record US$6 million.
