Sichone: South Africa Friendly Is a ‘Cup Final’ for Zambia
Zambia national team head coach Moses Sichone says the Chipolopolo will approach Saturday’s international friendly against South Africa with the highest level of seriousness, describing it as a “cup final” and a perfect test ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Speaking after the team’s Tuesday training session, Sichone said the match presents an opportunity for Zambia to prove their strength against a World Cup-bound South Africa—especially after noting sentiments from some sections of the South African public who appear to underrate the Chipolopolo.
“Of course, we are expecting a tough game against South Africa and we also want to give them a good friendly game,” Sichone said. “We are not just going there to play. We are taking it so seriously and we also want to win the game because South Africa qualified for the World Cup and it’s a good test for us… to give other guys a chance to prove a point also that they are ready for the AFCON.”
Sichone emphasised that national team selection remains open, particularly for in-form players in the domestic league.
“The door is still open. Players who are doing well in the local league still stand a chance. We are trying to balance the team with the old players and everyone. As long as they are Zambians… all we want is guys who are ready, who are ready to die for the country,” he said.
He also addressed comments from South Africa suggesting they preferred different opposition.
“We know that they have underrated us. I’ve been reading some comments… they wanted to play Brazil. But for us, we take it as it comes. We are taking this game very serious and we hope to get a positive result.”
Sichone further called for unity and patience from fans as Zambia prepares for the AFCON campaign.
“I’m representing the entire 20 million people plus. Expectations are high, but the boys need support. This generation needs as much support as they can get,” he said.
Zambia will face South Africa before travelling to meet Burundi in their second friendly of the November FIFA window.
