Spain 2-1 Belgium: Merino Sends Spain Into World Cup Semi-Finals After Late Comeback

Spain booked their place in the FIFA World Cup semi-finals after a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Belgium, with substitute Mikel Merino scoring a late winner in a tense quarter-final clash.
Luis de la Fuente’s side dominated possession and attacking statistics throughout the match, controlling 68% of the ball and registering 17 shots compared to Belgium’s five. Spain also created more danger in the final third, recording eight shots on target and two big chances, while Belgium managed only two efforts on target.
The Spanish pressure paid off in the 30th minute when Fabián Ruiz reacted quickest inside the box, firing home the rebound to give Spain a deserved 1-0 lead. Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois had already been forced into several saves as Spain’s talented attack continued to threaten.
Belgium, however, responded before halftime. In the 41st minute, Charles De Ketelaere rose highest to meet Timothy Castagne’s cross and headed the ball into the net, bringing the score level at 1-1.
After the break, Spain continued to push forward, with Lamine Yamal and Mikel Oyarzabal testing the Belgian defence. Courtois produced a brilliant save in the 63rd minute to deny Oyarzabal from close range, keeping Belgium alive.
The second half became increasingly open, with both sides searching for the decisive goal. Belgium threatened through Kevin De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku, but Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón stood firm when called upon.
Spain made several attacking changes, bringing on players including Pedri, Ferran Torres, Nico Williams and Mikel Merino in search of the breakthrough.
Their persistence was rewarded in the 88th minute. After a shot was blocked inside the box, the ball fell kindly to Mikel Merino, who calmly fired the rebound into the middle of the goal to put Spain ahead 2-1.
Belgium pushed for another equaliser during seven minutes of stoppage time, but Spain’s defence held strong to secure a place in the World Cup semi-finals.
Spain now advance to the World Cup semi-finals, where they will face France in a blockbuster showdown.
