Zambia Wrestling Team Secures Nigeria Championship Invitation

Zambian professional wrestling is set for a significant international outing after wrestler James Sumbi and promotion manager Kendricks Mabvuto Mwanza received an official invitation to participate in a major championship in Nigeria.

According to an invitation letter issued by Pro Wrestling Africa (PWA), the duo has been invited to Lagos to take part in the Pro Wrestling Africa Championship scheduled for May 3, 2026. The event will be held at the National Stadium in Surulere and will coincide with the election of PWA officials.

The letter indicates that the Zambian delegation is expected to arrive in Lagos on April 29 and depart on May 4, allowing them to participate in both the championship and the Annual General Meeting.

The invitation marks a major step forward for Zambia’s growing professional wrestling scene, as it offers local talent exposure on a continental platform. Sumbi, one of the country’s notable wrestlers, is expected to showcase his skills against some of Africa’s best competitors, while Mwanza will represent the administrative and promotional side of the sport.

Meanwhile, progress has been made towards facilitating the trip, with the Zambia Pro Wrestling Promotion initiating efforts to secure logistical support. Letters seeking assistance have already been issued to various stakeholders, with expectations that government will come on board to support the delegation.

Sources close to the promotion say the trip presents an important opportunity to elevate Zambia’s presence in professional wrestling and strengthen ties with other African federations.

The PWA, described as a confederation of African wrestling bodies, aims to promote and develop professional wrestling across the continent.

The upcoming championship is expected to attract participants from several African countries, making it a key platform for talent development, networking and the growth of the sport.
