Zambia’s CAF Campaign Resumes as Power Dynamos and ZESCO United Face Key Tests
Zambian representatives Power Dynamos and ZESCO United will be back in continental action later this month as the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup resume with crucial Group Stage Match Days Three, Four and Five.
The two flagship CAF interclub competitions return after a December pause occasioned by the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025, with fixtures scheduled between Friday, 23 January and Sunday, 25 January across Africa.
For Zambia, the restart marks a decisive phase in the group stages, with Match Day Three representing the halfway point in the race for the quarter-finals, where every point could prove vital.
Power Dynamos Target Home Advantage
In the CAF Champions League, Power Dynamos will be in action on Saturday, 24 January, when they host Nigeria’s Rivers United FC in a Group A encounter at 15h00 CAT.
The Kitwe-based side will be eager to capitalize on home advantage as they look to strengthen their position in a tightly contested group after two rounds of matches played before the AFCON break. With qualification margins expected to be narrow, the clash presents a key opportunity for Dynamos to build momentum heading into the second half of the group phase after suffering defeats in their first two matches of the group.
Elsewhere in Group A, Morocco’s RS Berkane will face Egypt’s Pyramids FC later in the day.
ZESCO United Face Tough Confederation Cup Test
Zambia’s other continental flag bearers, ZESCO United, will turn their focus to the CAF Confederation Cup, where they are set for a heavyweight Group D showdown against South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs.
The match will be played on Sunday, 25 January, kicking off at 15h00 CAT, with the Ndola giants seeking a positive result against one of the tournament’s most high-profile sides as they push for progression to the knockout stage.
The same group will also see an all-Egyptian affair later in the evening, with Zamalek SC taking on Al Masry SC.
Continental Heavyweights Return
Across the continent, Match Day Three will see several African heavyweights resume their campaigns. Record 12-time champions Al Ahly open the round on Friday, 23 January, hosting Tanzania’s Young Africans in Cairo, while Mamelodi Sundowns welcome Sudanese side Al Hilal in Pretoria.
CAF has described the upcoming round of fixtures as a “crucial juncture” in the group phase, with clubs expected to push for control and consistency as the competition moves closer to the quarter-finals.
