ZPL Debutants Rise to the Occasion as Zambia Hold Mali at AFCON

Zambian Premier League (ZPL) debutants delivered standout performances on the continental stage as Chipolopolo fought back to secure a hard-earned 1–1 draw against Mali in their opening Group A match of the TotalEnergies AFCON campaign.

In a tense encounter that tested Zambia’s resolve, it was the new faces from the domestic league who stood tallest, underlining the ZPL’s growing reputation as a breeding ground for top talent.

Mali looked set to claim all three points after Lassine Sinayoko struck in the 61st minute, capitalising on a corner to fire home from close range. The goal came after sustained Malian pressure in the second half, following a first half that ended goalless but saw plenty of physical battles and interruptions.

Earlier in the match, Zambia had already been handed a lifeline thanks to goalkeeper Willard Mwanza. On his AFCON debut, the ZPL shot-stopper produced a moment of brilliance in the 42nd minute, saving El Bilal Touré’s penalty after a VAR review awarded Mali a spot kick. Mwanza’s calm and composure between the posts kept Zambia level and firmly in the contest.

As the clock ticked into stoppage time, Chipolopolo pushed forward in search of an equaliser. That pressure finally paid off in the 90+2nd minute when debutant Mathews Banda delivered a perfectly weighted cross into the box. Patson Daka rose highest to power a header into the bottom corner, rescuing a vital point for Zambia and sparking celebrations among the travelling supporters.

Banda’s assist capped an impressive AFCON debut, adding to the growing influence of ZPL players on the biggest stage in African football. Alongside Mwanza’s penalty heroics, the contribution from the local league proved decisive in keeping Zambia’s campaign alive.

The draw leaves the Copper Bullets with everything to play for in the group, as they look to build momentum and push for a place beyond the group stage. Zambia will next face Comoros on Friday, knowing that belief, patience, and continued contributions from both local and foreign-based players will be key.

From local grounds to Africa’s grandest tournament, ZPL players are stepping up — and delivering when it matters most.
