Canada Edge South Africa To Reach World Cup Last 16 in Dramatic Fashion

Canada are through to the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup after a dramatic 1-0 win over South Africa in Los Angeles, with Stephen Eustáquio scoring a stoppage-time winner to send the co-hosts into the knockout stage for the first time.
In a tense Round of 32 clash, Eustáquio struck in the second minute of injury time with a composed finish from the edge of the box to break South Africa’s resistance.
Head coach Jesse Marsch praised his players, saying: “You guys are Canadian heroes! Canadian heroes for the future children of this country who play this sport. This sport has a big future because of you guys.”
Canada dominated much of the game but struggled to convert chances, with South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams making key saves and Aubrey Modiba clearing a header off the line from Moïse Bombito.
Eustáquio said: “We never stopped believing, and I think the goal is really something that we deserved.”
South Africa threatened occasionally, including a late Oswin Appollis effort that forced a save from Maxime Crépeau, but lacked cutting edge throughout.
Coach Hugo Broos admitted: “We lost the game because there was a lack of power and speed in our team when I compare that with our opponent.”
Canada were boosted by the return of Alphonso Davies in the 75th minute after injury, adding energy in the closing stages.
Canada’s tournament marks a major turnaround after losing all six previous World Cup matches, including a 6-0 win over Qatar and qualification for the knockouts despite a loss to Switzerland.
South Africa exit after reaching the knockout stage for the first time, but their attacking struggles were exposed, with all strikers failing to score during the tournament.
As one analysis noted, “Bafana’s woes upfront left them in an impossible position.”
Canada now face either the Netherlands or Morocco in Houston on July 4.
