Chipolopolo Back Themselves Ahead of Malawi Clash

The Chipolopolo Boys have left for Botswana to compete in the Mukuru Four Nations Tournament, with assistant coach Oswald Mutapa expressing confidence in his youthful squad ahead of the opening match against Malawi.

The team departed Kenneth Kaunda International Airport on Thursday afternoon aboard a chartered flight, with Mutapa taking charge in the absence of head coach George Lwandamina, who will be away with the senior squad for the Argentina assignment.

The Football Association of Zambia has reinforced the technical bench, with Mumamba Numba joining as first assistant, George Chilufya as second assistant, Chintu Kampamba as physical trainer, and Mike Poto as goalkeeper coach.

Speaking before departure, Mutapa said the tournament is both developmental and competitive, stressing the importance of building a winning mentality.

“It’s important that we understand, yes, it’s developmental, but also we have to know that it’s important that we have that habit of winning. For us to do better at the senior level, even at developmental, we need to start winning,” he said.

Mutapa described the squad as youthful but experienced, having featured at various junior national levels.

“A very youthful side, but with a lot of games in their legs… having played for the under-17, under-20 and now upgrading to under-23,” he said.

Despite facing stronger opposition, Mutapa dismissed any fear factor.

“Football is the same everywhere you go. So there is no way we are going to fear… we need to go there, showcase our talents and show effort,” he said.

Looking ahead to the Malawi clash, Mutapa remained optimistic.

“It’s always an interesting derby with Malawi… I feel we have the players that can do the job. Firstly, we have to believe in ourselves that we are a very capable side,” he added.

Zambia opens its campaign on March 28, aiming to progress to the final of the four-team tournament.
